Led by sophomore guard Starr Taylor with 12 points, Arkansas State defeated The University of Arkansas Monticello 83-52 in their home opening exhibition matchup.

The Red Wolves are now 25-0 in exhibition games dating back to the 2005-2006 season.

“I think it was a good game for us,” A-State Head Coach Brian Boyer said. “We did a lot of good things, but I also think we saw a lot things defensively. They did a lot of screen action that we haven’t seen in practice and we didn’t handle it well in the first half, but in the second half we were better and did a better job of communicating on the ball screen.”

Sophomore Jada Ford and junior Akasha Westbrook both reached double figures with 10, while freshman forward Peyton Martin followed with nine.

Senior forward Ogo Obinabo snagged a team-high of eight rebounds, followed by sophomore forward Madison Heckert with seven. Freshman guard Morgan Wallace added six.

“I think there were signs tonight and I’ve talked about how fast this team can be,” Boyer said. “We got everybody chance, but where we go from here I just don’t know. I’ve said all along there just isn’t a whole lot of separation with this group.”

The Red Wolves held a 57-36 advantage on the boards and shot 44 percent from the floor in comparison to the Cotton Blossoms’ .250 percentage. Arkansas State never trailed.

Arkansas State returns to First National Bank Area, Tuesday to host Lyon College. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
