Arkansas State easily defeated the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff Golden Lions 48-3 in the Red Wolves home opener on Saturday night. This improved A-State’s record to 1-1 on the season. Fans totaling 24,371 were at Centennial Bank Stadium for the first football game in Jonesboro this year.

Head Coach Blake Anderson was happy with a win but thought his team’s play could have been better.

“First off I’m excited about the win, I thought the crowd was great and I love the fact we got a chance to win at home. Overall I’m just frustrated with sloppy play. We had missed kicks, we had missed tackles and we had missed assignments” Anderson said.

Redshirt junior Justice Hansen completed 24 of 31 passes with no interceptions. Although Hansen tied the school record for passing touchdowns in a single game with five, he was still frustrated with himself.

“For him the misses, the layups that he had that he missed were the things that he wants back. At half time he was more frustrated than I was. He’s a competitor. He wants to be perfect” Anderson said.

Many different Red Wolf running backs got carries on Saturday night. Junior Warren Wand had 9 carries for 62 yards with 1 touchdown and redshirt senior Johnston White had 10 carries for 38 yards. Redshirt freshman Jamal Jones and redshirt senior Armond Weh-- Weh also got carries on the night.

The Red Wolves will take the momentum from the UAPB game to Dallas next weekend where they will take on the SMU Mustangs in a tough road game.

“It will be great teaching tape. We have to get it [mistakes from UAPB game] fixed because we have a tough road game next week against a really good team in SMU” Anderson said.

The Mustangs are 2-1 on the season and fell to Texas Christian University (TCU) 56-36 on Saturday. ESPN’s football power index predicts SMU to defeat the Red Wolves by 75.5%.
